Sharing American
culture with Chinese beneficial to all
By:
Angelo Mendez/Campus Correspondent
This past summer, a group consisting
of 30 UConn students and two faculty members took an all-expenses-paid
trip to the third-largest country in the world: China.
Bordered on the north by Mongolian deserts, on the west by the Himalayas
and the east by the South China seas, China is considered to be an
excellent place to expand knowledge of a foreign culture.
Keith Curran, the executive director of the "Journey 2 the East"
China trip. Proficient in Russian, French and Chinese, he has taught
English in several countries, including Russia, the Ukraine and China.
"Our mission is to foster cross-cultural understanding between Chinese
and Americans. The organization attempts to achieve this goal by
providing Americans and Chinese with various educational opportunities
to study, work and live in US or China," Curran said.
Included in the trip was a three-day tour of Beijing, China's capitol,
and the city known as "the pearl of the Orient," Shanghai.
One hundred twenty university students from across the country who
passed the required interview process also participated in the program.
Topics covered in the curriculum included politics, the Taiwan
situation, democracy and economic liberalism along with nuclear weapons
defense.
Chinese students are grouped by age, which range from 9 to 19.
"Younger students typically want to learn about American music and pop
culture," said Curran. "The goal is to inspire the Chinese students to
learn English rather than to teach formal grammar."
Fox remembers the experience of teaching in a classroom environment and
her experiences with her students as some of her best memories.
"I would encourage everyone to write down his/her expectations before
hand and then compare them with the reality of the experience upon
return to the U.S.," Fox said. "As for myself, it was basically what I
expected. It was a highly developed country with a great deal of
consumer goods, very modern, very connected to the outside world
including entertainment media."
Along with absorbing the culture and the 100-degree weather, she also
experienced China's fresh foods such as dumplings, tofu, vegetables,
soybean related noodles and soups, duck, pork and chicken. Plenty of
fish and shrimp were common along with fresh fruit like watermelon,
peaches, plums, dates and apples.
The overall attitude by the Chinese towards the American presence was
positive, according to Curran, who said, "Our group was greeted by
friendly, curious Chinese people wanting to make friends and practice
what little English they knew. We were treated like celebrities."
"Journey 2 the East," runs from July 5 to August 18. Applications are
being accepted through June 1. American college students who are
accepted into the new program will pay a program fee of $2100.
