America in the eyes of Chinese people

How the ordinary Chinese people see America? Upon the occasion that Chinese President Hu Jintao is in America for a state visit, People's Daily has interviewed some Chinese citizens on their impression on the United States.

Tong Lanhua, 56, a retired cadre: Talking about America, it always gives me an impression that its economy and technology are very advanced. Products with American brands are generally trustworthy and the qualities are quite good. America always feels itself high above other countries. Whatever you call it, Chauvinism, or hegemony, but I think America should at least be friendly to other countries. As for the development of China, China and the US will both develop fast as long as they have correct attitude and encourage each other. The international relations are just like that of people. China and America ought to have a right attitude on how to get along with each other.

Zhang Guanghong, a primary school teacher in Yichang, Hubei Province, central China: As a recognized great power in the world, America's economy and society are very prosperous. There are lots of advanced things for us to learn. The world needs the US, and the US should be responsible for the world. But many of its words and deeds failed to show a responsible attitude. China can view the US as brother, but it will never call any country "boss". America is the very root of the longstanding Taiwan issue. China and America will progress more smoothly provided that America does not treat China with double standards, and does not play tricks on the Taiwan issue.

Li Chen, a senior student in Beijing Normal University: The United States is undoubtedly a great power. The China-US relations involve three aspects: the global situation, the common interest, and bilateral problems. Disputes and contradictions between the two countries are quite normal. In general, the US is a country maintaining the status quo, while the development of China is gradually bringing changes to the world economic order. China can only react to US responses to the changes. But I think China can also take some initiatives, which help the US correctly understand the messages conveyed from China.

Zheng Wentian, 36, an engineer: America is a big country, and the world No. 1 power. In the eyes of a Chinese, the way it handles international affairs is too overbearing. I am ignorant of international politics, but I believe the core of international politics lies in the realization of healthy development of relations between countries through equal consultation and diplomatic means.
